Why Good Leaders Make You Feel Safe
In his famous TED Talk, Simon Sinek argues that good leaders make you feel safe by building a “Circle of Safety” that protects the team from external dangers. When a leader chooses to put the safety and lives of their people first, it triggers a natural, biological response that fosters deep trust and cooperation.
1. The Circle of Safety
-
- External Dangers are Constant: The world is full of variables we cannot control, such as a volatile economy, fierce competition, or changing technologies.
- Internal Conditions can be Controlled: Leaders cannot stop external threats, but they entirely control the environment inside the organization.
- The Leader Sets the Tone: By drawing a perimeter around the team, a true leader ensures that employees do not have to fight each other for survival or recognition.
2. Biology and Evolution
-
- An Ancient Survival Mechanism: In early human history, the world was full of physical dangers like predators.
- Safety Breeds Cooperation: Humans evolved to cooperate because we realized we were safer together. Trust is a biological reaction to feeling secure.
- Eliminating Internal Fear: If you feel unsafe inside your own organization, you force your brain to waste vital energy defending itself from coworkers, managers, and politics.
3. Sacrifice and Responsibility
- People Over Numbers: Great leaders would sooner sacrifice the financial numbers to save their people, rather than sacrificing their people to save the numbers.
- Leadership is a Choice: It is not a rank or a title. True leaders possess authority but choose to look after the person to the left of them and the person to the right of them.
- Earning Lifelong Loyalty: When leaders accept the responsibility to protect their workers, the natural human response from the team is to give their blood, sweat, and tears to see the leader’s vision advance.
